Why Our Family Loves Ski Vacations – And Why Yours Might Too!

There’s something truly special about ski vacations — and for our family, they’ve become a favorite way to travel. Whether we're staying close to home or venturing to a new mountain range, the combination of adventure, bonding time, and breathtaking scenery always makes for an unforgettable trip.

Sometimes we’re lucky enough to share the slopes with extended family or friends, which makes the experience even more memorable.

So far, we’ve skied at some fantastic destinations:

*Lutsen Mountains, Minnesota

*Boyne Highlands, Michigan

*Big Powderhorn Mountain, Michigan

*Big Snow Resort, Michigan

*Steamboat, Colorado

*Vail, Colorado

And our ski vacation bucket list just keeps growing!

So, what is it that makes ski vacations so great for families like ours?

Quality Time with a Shared Passion

Downhill skiing is something we all love — and that shared hobby brings us closer. When the first snowflakes fall, we’re already counting the days until the lifts open! During the season, our boys (ages 9 and 13) often participate in lessons, races, or ski clubs. But on vacation, we get to ski together as a family. When I asked my 9-year-old what he loves most, he said: “I love family ski vacations because I get to ski with family all day.” That really says it all.

Discovering New Places

Every ski destination offers something unique — from scenic trails and cozy lodges to off-mountain fun like dining, shopping, spas, and more. Exploring these new places is half the adventure! My 13-year-old put it perfectly: “I love ski vacations because if you go to certain places, there’s more to do besides skiing.” At Steamboat, for example, we got to ride the longest mountain coaster in North America — such a cool experience!

The Magic of the Mountains

While beach vacations have their own charm, there’s something awe-inspiring about being in the mountains. The crisp air, the stunning views, and the daily dose of outdoor activity all combine to create a refreshing and energizing experience.

Skill Building for All Ages

Each new mountain challenges us in different ways — longer runs, deeper powder, steeper terrain. And every trip, we come home better skiers. The variety helps our kids (and us!) build confidence and skills on the slopes, no matter the destination.
