A few years ago, my in-laws came to us with a bold idea: a multi-generational family beach vacation over Christmas to celebrate both the holidays and their 50th wedding anniversary.
Thirteen of us from four different states, all heading to a tropical destination—what a surprise!
As a travel professional (and a vacation enthusiast!), I loved the idea. But I’ll admit—being from Minnesota, I was hesitant to trade our traditional white Christmas for white sand. Would it still feel like Christmas?
Once we confirmed the destination—an all-inclusive resort in beautiful Riviera Maya—everything started falling into place. We booked five rooms, coordinated round-trip flights and airport transfers, and the excitement began to build.
Travel Tip: Once your trip is booked, create a group text or private Facebook group. It’s a fun way to keep everyone organized, share packing tips, and build excitement as the trip approaches.
As the holiday season neared, I noticed something unexpected—my stress was melting away.
Instead of decorating the house and prepping for guests, I was packing swimsuits and sandals.
Instead of planning a holiday menu, I was planning excursions to the Coba ruins.
Instead of navigating crowded stores, I was ordering gifts online and double-checking flip flop sizes.
And guess what? It was magical. Don’t get me wrong—I still love the Christmas season. I gave meaningful gifts, just fewer of them. And instead of hostess gifts and party prep, I created memories that would last a lifetime.
Travel Tip: Custom matching family T-shirts made great Christmas gifts and photo souvenirs. I had them made for everyone, and we wore them during a resort photo session. The pictures? Absolutely priceless.
At the resort, we spent the week reconnecting—lounging by the beach, snorkeling, exploring ruins, playing games, swimming in cenotes, and sharing long, leisurely meals together. No one had to cook. No one had to clean. We were all just present.
And the Christmas spirit? It was alive and well! The resort went all out with festive decorations, themed dinners, live holiday entertainment, and even a visit from Santa and his elves.
That trip changed the way I view the holidays. Since then, I’ve helped countless families trade holiday stress for tropical sunsets—booking Caribbean all-inclusive resorts and festive cruises that bring everyone together in a joyful, relaxing setting.
If you’re ready to create new family traditions in paradise, I’d love to help you plan a stress-free holiday getaway that’s all about connection, celebration, and making unforgettable memories.
